the french make skateboarding a philosophical thing.

i want something like this. a commune of sorts filled with everyone you like, doing this thing that make you all happy.

the world can always use some more love.

Charlyne Yi does not believe in love. or so she says.

if i live by this, i'l be happy.

i want to make something cool everyday, read something beautiful everyday, do something stupid, silly, or genius everyday.

i hate that you're sexy.

"Now," said Max, "let the Wild Rumpus start!"

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE is the most beautiful, childhood nostalgia inducing book and i swear, i cry every time i read it. i even cried the first four times i watched the trailer for the upcoming film (directed by Spike Jonze) based on the book .

WILD CAKE!!

the Rumpus score.

Whenever I try to sleep, things start a buzzin.

i was staring at these rarely worn men's moccasins sitting lonely in my closet when it hit me. feathers.

so i folded down the tongue and glued it shut, then i added a strip of feathers i bought downtown awhile ago. ta-da. my new favorite shoes.

GIRL TALK

Gregg Gillis' project GIRL TALK is a mesh of everything you've ever heard, as you've never heard it before. i got Feed the Animals (his fourth album) when it first came out last year, but only recently started listening to Night Ripper (his third release, 2006) and it is soooooooo good.

somehow the perfectly corresponding mash-ups and meticulous looping are made even hotter by the fact that that during the day Gillis is a 26 year-old biomedical engineer. and that is made even hotter by the fact that he is constantly looking over his shoulder waiting to be sued for using other people's music to make his own. a rebel musician with a medical degree... the best of both worlds.

Up All Night

sometimes my body decides it doesn't want to sleep. not that it doesn't need sleep, but just wants to remind me who's boss. these times, of course, are not on nights i'm up finishing a paper or studying for a test. so i lay awake in my bed hoping to catch some shut eye, but to no avail. the hours just tick by without being used for something productive.

finally though, i have broken the cycle. tomorrow i will look as if i got in a bar fight, and lost. but i will have written two-thirds of a story, revised a poem, and recounted the event to no one but myself.

recently bought the LOW VS DIAMOND album and it is quit stellar. lead singer Lucas Field has a Killers meets Carolina Liar feel, but not quite as whiny as the latter, and a little more rugged than the former. first check their live Daytrotter Session, the gent has some genuine pipes.

i bought a pair of Doc Martins for my impending semester abroad at Glasgow University. they cost a pretty penny, but the flower design and idea that would last me forever convinced me it was worth it. they arrived today and were, apparently, made in Taiwan... disappointing?

SOME THINGS ARE TIMELESS YOU KNOW

ALWAYS CALIFORNIA DREAMING

Chester French

if you don't find Chester French weirdly charming, then they're just real assholes. i'm leaning pretty far towards weirdly charming. check this interview with New York Post for reasoning.

BLACK LIPS black lips BLACK LIPS black lips

so through a string of serendipitous events i won tickets to go see BLACK LIPS play in Pomona at The Glass House last night (which was sooo lucky cause i was too broke to buy them myself). holy shit. they were fucking amazing. i walked away soaking wet, bruised, dizzy and smiling. the crowd was insane. the whole place was like one massive mosh pit. people kept trying to stage dive, but security put up one hell of a fight considering. however once it became clear BLACK LIPS wasn't going to do anything to discourage the fans, they kind of gave up. in the end a bunch of chicks ran the stage and danced and kissed all the musicians they could. really though, the guys in BLACK LIPS were sweet and gracious while simultaneously evoking an energy that moved you to dance around incoherently or kick the crap out of each other.
the best kind of musicians.

(this is the only picture i have right now. but it says a lot)

GIGANTIC

there are some movies that you see once and as soon as it's over, wish so much that you could stay in the uncomfortable red chair to experience the whole thing over again. GIGANTIC is one such movie. it's insightful and quirky and balances heavy and light moments seamlessly. plus, you will probably walk away swooning for Paul Dano.
